Acai Bowls from the CrossFit Games

Acai bowls are becoming part of the culture of the CrossFit Games. The Sambazon tent dishes out more acai bowls than one can count during the four days of the games. This year was no different as hoards gobbled up acai topped with berries, bananas, goji berries, coconut shreds, cacao nibs and peanut butter.

I did some sleuthing at the Sambazon booth during the 2017 games in Madison and turns out they are using the Sambazon sorbet as the base for their bowls, giving it a thick texture that is harder to recreate using their acai packs.

The upside is you have a very solid base to build the bowl on. The downside is it does have quite a bit of added sugar. I will show you how to recreate the BERRY BOWL exactly like the one at the games and then show you some other no-added sugar alternatives.

How to Make the BERRY BOWL

Ingredients

  • 1 cup Sambazon Original Acai Berry Sorbet - find your nearest retailer here
  • 1/4 cup fresh blueberries
  • 2 tbsp. Goji berries
  • 1/2 banana sliced
  • 1-2 tbsp. dried mulberries
  • 1-2 tbsp. peanut butter

Directions

Start by letting the sorbet soften for 10 minutes on the counter. At this point you can scoop it into a bowl or you can blend it with a splash of water to create a very creamy base.

Add your acai base to a bowl and top with fresh blueberries, banana slices, goji berries, dried mulberries and peanut butter drizzle.

You can find goji berries and dried mulberries at Whole Foods or most health foods stores.

Acai Protein Bowl

Our next bowl is a high-protein, no-added sugar bowl that is a perfect post-workout snack (or great for fueling 1-2 hours before a WOD.)

To create the acai base, you will use the Sambazon Performance Protein packs that are a mix of acai, strawberries and organic brown rice protein. By using one of these packs plus some protein powder, I have created a bowl with almost 40g of protein, perfect for stimulating muscle protein synthesis (MPS) since research indicates 30g is a good cutoff for triggering MPS.

Start by thawing your pack in a glass of water (leave acai in plastic wrap) for about 1 minute until it breaks into chunks. Cut open plastic packet and empty contents into blender.

Add frozen pineapple, protein powders, maca powder, coconut water and blend. Now add the 1/2 cup frozen blueberries and blend again until fully incorporated. Pour into bowl and top with sliced strawberries, goji berries and sprinkle of hemp seeds.

Chocolate & Coconut Bowl

A mix of chocolates, coconut and a touch of agave make this the perfect dessert bowl that is still full of antioxidants and protein thanks to nutrient-dense blueberries in two forms and collagen protein. I love using Lily's Dark Chocolate products because they have no added sugar but still deliver an intense, quality chocolate flavor.

Blend with blueberries, protein powder, coconut water and regular water. Add optional agave. NOTE: Without the agave, this bowl will not taste super sweet so adjust to your preferences.

Pour base into a bowl.

Top with chocolate chips, coconut chips, cacao nibs, a drizzle of cashew butter and a sprinkle of freeze-dried blueberries.
